tips for surviving the heat
Rebecca has a life/sanity-saving list of tips for keeping cool - both her own and a fantastic list from Garret Vreeland in New Mexico. Here in the UK it looks as though the weather is cooling and the humidity, which I found the most difficult to deal with, going down. Which means that the fan I ordered when I really needed it will arrive when I don't really need it. Fortunately the one I ordered for my mother in law arrived yesterday - she's nearly 98 and moved south a few years ago, so is really feeling it.
The weather forecasters say August is going to be blistering too. I should print those lists out and stick them up somewhere. I'm not geared up for this. For the most part, only shops and offices have air-conditioning, though I have it in the cars.
Now, off to get some more fluids down me.

I wish I lived in the UK. I live in houston texas...today the high is 110 degrees ferinheight. It is horrible. I am going through like ten glasses of water a day.
Sounds terrible - what would Jane Austin have made of that - gives me the vapours just thinking about it.
In very hot in North America as well. I noticed in the last few years here in Canada we have very very high temperatures and humidex (humidity) values increase it even higher, often 35-45C. I have been luck to live in a new building with central A/C but I feel really bad for those trying to survive with just a fan. At least the city of Toronto keeps pools open late into the night and they have cooling centers set up where people can stay. I noticed even people from Red Cross walking around the park here giving away free bottles of water to homeless or anyone walking by. Climate is changing and I have no doubts about it now.
I've been going for low-tech alternatives, too. Either wetting a muslin scarf and wrapping it round my head or neck or spraying my head with a plant mister and furiously fanning myself with a little woven palm-leaf fan. Trying to ncool down from the extra heat from global warming without using more electricity that will create more global warming - it's a challenge!
