Learn the basics of Pureland practice and find out what it means to practise. This introductory retreat is open to all. We will introduce some basic concepts found in the Amidist approach to Pureland Buddhism and spend some time practising together. Amida retreats are friendly, informative, and replenishing. This will be a good time for those interested in taking time out from a busy or stressful life to relax, chant, explore one's faith and spirituality and experience life in a Buddhist community.

Susthama and a couple of members from The Buddhist House will go to France in mid-May (2008) to open it up for the summer season. The retreat centre has been closed for the winter period and so there will be alot of work initially; getting the place aired out and clean, digging the garden to get the beds ready for planting, clearing paths for outdoor walking meditation and also to make a way to the meditation hut ready for anybody interested in doing a solitary retreat in the woods.
It's a great time of year to be in France. If you're in need of space, fresh air, and a retreat atmosphere then do come along.

Studies in Peace and Wisdom
New Seminar series exploring the failure of the enlightenment
Those interested in how we got into this fine mess may be interested in a provocative series of seminars, Studies in Peace and Wisdom, taking place on Tuesday evenings in the Bodhi Garden (starting 26th February). The seminars will be led by local author Chris Dornan (In Search of Sense and Sensibility). Chris will challenge us with a new perspective of modernity based on ancient wisdom from East and West with the aid of Buddhist meditation techniques from the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Only by addressing the roots of the problem - our patterns of thought - can we hope to ring the changes.
Visiting speakers include the award-winning investigative journalist and author of Flat Earth News, Nick Davies, and internationally recognised meditation teacher Christopher Titmuss. There is no charge but donations to cover the costs of running the centre will be appreciated. For more details, see: studies.peaceandwisdom.org.

Dear Friends,
With the Amida conference approaching fast we need your help to get the word out. If you would like to help, please circulate information on any networks you know, put notices on notice boards, and, above all, tell people. Word of mouth is what helps most. If you can distribute publicity material please do and if you need more, please let Mudita or me know.

For the third year we will explore contemporary culture through the eyes of leading voices the arts and political arenas. This course block is timed to coincide with De Montfort Univesity’s Cultural Exchanges Programme, which offers a rich diversity of presentations by interesting contemporary figures. As a group we attend some of these presentations, interspersing the events with our own group sessions for discussion and exploration of the topics raised. On previous occasions we have also taken advantage of other local events, creating an exciting and stimulating journey, enhanced by the group process, which itself has been very rich. This event attracts an interesting group of participants, and offers many opportunities to learn from one another as well as from the outside events. If you have a special area of interest and expertise, we would welcome your input. This nine day programme is open to participants who can attend all or part. The group process is important to this event, being a shared journey during which ideas and themes unfold, so participating for the whole block will give you a particularly rich experience, however, the format is sufficiently open that new-comers can join for parts of the programme, though we generally ask people to attend full sections at the weekends. Please discuss your availability with us.
