The actor Paul Newman, who has died aged 83, became so famous for his dazzling looks and the bluest eyes in the business that it is impossible to think of him as other than a celebrity.
Yet his many-faceted, contradictory character renders the star image superficial. He was a notable producer-director, a racing car enthusiast, a political activist and a philanthropist, counted as the person who had distributed more money — in relation to his own wealth — than any American in the 20th century.
An all round beautiful man.
LOS ANGELES — Guillermo del Toro is directing "The Hobbit" and its sequel, New Line Cinema announced Thursday. The 43-year-old filmmaker will move to New Zealand for four years to make the films back-to-back with executive producer Peter Jackson.....Jackson and Walsh called del Toro "a cinematic magician who has never lost his childlike sense of wonder."
The Moleskine (what else?):

Lani Teshima and Donald Friedman alerted us about Daniel Day-Lewis' notebook in "There Will Be Blood":
There are little peeks at what looks like a pocket-sized notebook, but there is a scene where Day-Lewis's character is in a meeting with some bigwigs when he slaps his notebook down on the table. It lands, and the camera stays on the view so that you can very clearly tell the telltale signs of the pocket Moleskine, with its hardcover black cover and elastic band!
Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings."
Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit."

"Learn To Be Still"
It's just another day in paradise
As you stumble to your bed
You'd give anything to silence
Those voices ringing in your head
You thought you could find happiness
Just over that green hill
You thought you would be satisfied
But you never will-
Learn to be stillWe are like sheep without a shepherd
We don't know how to be alone
So we wander 'round this desert
And wind up following the wrong gods home
But the flock cries out for another
And they keep answering that bell
And one more starry-eyed messiah
Meets a violent farewell-
Learn to be still
Learn to be stillNow the flowers in your garden
They don't smell so sweet
Maybe you've forgotten
The heaven lying at your feet[Solo]
There are so many contradictions
In all these messages we send
(We keep asking)
How do I get out of here
Where do I fit in?
Though the world is torn and shaken
Even if your heart is breakin'
It's waiting for you to awaken
And someday you will-
Learn to be still
Learn to be stillYou just keep on runnin'
Keep on runnin'

Video: Show us the next DVD or movie you're looking forward to seeing.
1971 - I had a toddler and a new-born and I was well into my hippy phase, which, in some ways, I never grew out of, I'm delighted to say.
(But why does the picture of the DVD cover disappear once I've selected it from Amazon UK?)
We're taking this with us to the lodge tonight.
