The patient sat with his eyes closed, submerged in the rhythm of his own breathing, and after a while noticed that he was thinking about his troubled relationship with his father.
"I was able to be there, present for the pain," he said, when the meditation session ended. "To just let it be what it was, without thinking it through."
The therapist nodded.
"Acceptance is what it was," he continued. "Just letting it be. Not trying to change anything."
"That's it," the therapist said. "That's it, and that's big."
This exercise in focused awareness and mental catch-and-release of emotions has become perhaps the most popular new psychotherapy technique of the past decade.
This morning I went for a biomechanical assessment (not at this centre) to look at the arthritis in my L foot - it seems I have Hallux rigidus.
Oh the joys of ageing! As it's too advanced for any other treatment, it
looks like surgery for me. And, because I have M.E., I'm not too good
with general anaesthetics, it'll be with local anaesthetic. Not
something to look forward to (the whine of the saw! As a radiographer
in a previous phase of my life, I've been in orthopaedic
surgery). But maybe I'll be springing around like a spring lamb
afterwards.

The First Noble Truth declares unflinchingly, straight out, that pain is inherent in life itself just because everything is changing. The Second Noble Truth explains that suffering is what happens when we struggle with whatever our life experience is rather than accepting and opening to our experience with wise and compassionate response. From this point of view, theres a big difference between pain and suffering. Pain is inevitable; lives come with pain. Suffering is not inevitable. If suffering is what happens when we struggle with experience because of our inability to accept it, then suffering is an optional extra.
I misunderstood this when I started my practice and believed if I meditated hard enough I would be finished with all pain. That turned out to be a big mistake. I was disappointed when I discovered the error and embarrassed that I had been so nave. Its obvious we are not going to finish with pain in this lifetime.
The Buddha said, Everything dear to us causes pain. Those of us who have chosen relational life have made the choice that the pain is worth it.

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.
The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.
I quite agree with a Western doctor who recently told me that those people who often use the words I, my, and me are at a greater risk of having a heart attack. When, because of self-centeredness, your view is narrowed to yourself, even a small problem will seem unbearable.
